Avoiding Convenient Circumstances in a Story

How many times do you watch or a book where the main character is given or taught random things for seemingly no reason? Worse yet, these things turn out to be big deciders in the final outcome of the story. How convenient for the writer.

Unfortuanetly, many readers aren't fooled.

There's a way to avoid these pitfalls, however. Simply make sure the characters who give/teach the main character those random tidbits have proper motivations for what they.

An old farmer in Oklahomo teaching a tourist how to wrestle might verge on being too convient, but it's more believable when you discover the farmer was a wrestling champion and suffered some brain damage.

I like to avoid these convient consequences as much as possible, but if it can't be helped, make the character's have great motivations.

I'm still deciding on whether or not to be a missionary...Guess I need to decide since classes start in the Fall. I've considered entering the movie industry, but I don't know if I can make enough for a living doing that. Not that I'd be rollin' in it as a missionary. I'm not just looking at money for my carreer, but as a guy I have to think about maybe supporting a family some day. Makes everything a bit more confusing. Be praying please!

Ah yes, the thorn in my side. Thanks for giving me a way to deal with it!

I just sent a quickie off to the Father for ya! So which way are you leaning? But which option do you have more peace about?

Either way, you will do some good for the Kingdom. But the only way you can do the most good is by asking the Father where He wants you to be, and ask Him for confirmations, whether it's through a dream, a conversation, or an offhand remark.

I was on a missions trip in Brazil, and one of my friends, who has by now graduated college, was trying to decide whether or not to go to a ministry training school in Australia. He lives in North Carolina. Mom said that he was going off the deep end. That was all it took, and he decided to go to the ministry school. Why? That was the third time (I think) someone had told him he was going off the deep end in one day. The ministry school is called the Deep End. Ha! Idn't that kewl?

Appreciate it, Arakan. Right now I'm leaning towards being a missionary...maybe to Russia or the Middle East. I can't say if I'm quite at peace about it, but my brother wasn't at peace about what he was doing for about a year. The hard part is going to be moving away from where I'm at now. Oh well. Guess I should get used to that. I guess you could pray I get some peace about this, though.

Thanks a bunch!
