What sucks readers into a story? It's good plotting, characters, pace, etc., but also it has to do with putting the reader into the action.
This is SHOWING the reader the story, not TELLING them.
Let me show you the difference. The following is an example of telling you my story:
Frank was angry.
This is showing:
Frank's eyes bulged and his fist clenched as he stared up at his brother.
Here's another example of telling:
The people in the marketplace got out of the way of the riders.
Showing:
The people pinned themselves against walls or hid in alleyways as the riders thundered passed.
It's easy to slip into TELLING a story instead of SHOWING it, but it's a discipline that's worth learning. I catch myself doing it all the time.:)

Umm....I always tell...I suck.

That is so true! That's a great tip :P
Hey Jamin,
I am greatly impressed with your work. I read part of your first novel and found myself wondering howt his very young man could possibly know the things he is writing.... you are wise beyond your years.

Dude, you are too insightful! I already knew the show, don't tell thing, and am using it in my latest little story, but you put it in words! (sarcastic irony not intended, lol)
Great advice. I can't stand it when an author cheats you of the pleasure of looking deeper to come up with your own conclusion on something. Then again, I do it as much as anyone else. I swing to the extreme in both directions (telling or showing WAY too much at a time).
Thanks for your insight- it should help me keep things to a happy medium,
Catey
I know this is true, but I HATE hearing it after a while...:-)
Thanks everyone! I'd better go back to editing....I'm running on about 18 hours of sleep this week, but I'm about two-thirds of the way through my book.
I'm a teller or a show-er. Depends on my mood and how grumpy I am about actually having been able to sit down and write. lol.
