Alright, you're done with your book or story. Now what? Do you go straight to editing?
You can do that, but I recommend doing some rewriting. Take a good look at the entire manuscript, and think of ways you can make it better.
"Can I punch up this scene?"
"Can I make this part more subtle?"
"Should I speed up this area or slow it down?"
"Would this part be more dramatic from another character's point of view?"
I also use it to refine all the details. You'd be surprised how many times characters change eye colors or lose their weapons between scenes! Have you noticed how actors in movies heal from their scratches pretty quick? You're checking for the same sort of thing.
Rewriting and editing are completely different. Rewriting is ripping entire sections out of your house, whereas editing is the finer part where you polish and organize the interior.
How many details do you think escape you when you're writing?

This is a good post, because I'm in the middle of writing a story, too. I'm a good deal younger than you, but I'm not to reveal my age.

P.S. In real life, my older sisters are friends with kiwifruit.
The thought of editing makes me shudder too much...I call it *checking*...I know that sounds weird, but calling it something else helps me not to worry about it so much.

Good to meet you, Catfreak70! I definitely understand that age deal. I hope you find some more useful info on here.
After two straight years of editing, I've kind of gotten used to the word now, Judi. :) It's still daunting, though.
Hey, Jamin! Have you read any of Wayne Thomas Batson’s books: The Door Within, The Rise of the Wrym Lord, The Final Storm, Isle of Swords, and the soon to be released Isle of Fire? If you haven’t, you don’t know what you’re missing! Check out Mr. Wayne’s blog: http://enterthedoorwithin.blogspot.com/
I’m doing this “review” for a Treasure Hunt Mr. Wayne is having. Come join us! If I was the first person to inform you about the contest, please mention that when you sign up. Thanks!
I'll definitely do that!
