I know, most people don't like outlining. Many writers want their story to take form as the characters take action. But it's always a good idea to have some general idea of where you're going with a story.
On the other hand, you outline too much your story turns to cardboard. Where's the line?
Here's what I do; give your character some BAD scenario and let him figure out how to get out from there. Having this general outline will help when it comes time to write a proposal with a 1-2 page synopsis.
Just for curiosity's sake, how many people don't like outlining?
Sorry if I haven't visited some of y'all's blogs in a while! This summer is a bit busier than I anticipated.

Dude, you are so insightful! That really helps!
I don't outline. I never have. I don't like it. I just like to sit down and start typing. I don't like to plan...but that's just my small opinion.

I really don't enjoy outlining, but I do a little on a piece of paper, mainly a sort of connect-the-dots, where I have certain events planned for happening, but much of the story sprouts from inbetween the dots.

What is that a picture of??? If it's an outline, it's the most bizzare looking outline I've ever seen! :-D

For me, I outline a lot. Not because I particuarly enjoy it, because I have the memory of a T-rex and I'll forget everything. ;)
Thanks, Arakan!
I'm jealous, Judi. They say some people can do that. For others (like me) it takes a lot of thinking.
Sounds like you've got a killer strategy, Elliot!
The picture is an outline, Kiwifruit. I think they call it mind webbing, but don't quote me on that!
I don't have enough brain power to think. :)

I try to outline but it doesn't work for me. I make a sort of timeline in my head and branch from that.
