Where do you find inspiration for your latest book? One great tool is history.
There are hundreds of great events that leaves me speechless. For instance, Charles the Hammer. After Rome's fall, Europe scattered into small nations fighting with themselves. Sometime between 300-600 A.D, a Muslim invasion plunged into Europe. They left a trail of carnage behind as the "barbarians" fought poorly.
One man had seen the threat from the South. Charles knew only a well trained and disciplined army could defeat the Moors. He risked being excommunicated, rallied an army, and drilled discipline into the tribesmen.
The day came when Charles's infantry fought the Muslim Calvary, the best in the world. Who won? I'll let you find out yourself.
You can also use history to plan scenes. When Palatine overthrew the Republic in Star Wars, does that seem close to what happened in Rome?
Gandalf stabbed his staff downwards to stop the balrog from crossing in the Fellowship of the Ring. Does that seem like Moses at the Red Sea?
Also, notice something in The Lord of the Rings. Nazgul....Nazi.
There're thousands of opportunities in history books. The events you find there are because of people's actions. They drove history, and that's what characters in a good novel are supposed to do.
Does anyone have something to add?

I really liked the post on your blog. When you look back in history and think of the amazing battles fought before us and what we can learn from them is truly inspriring. I red the last post and liked what you said about magazines and publishers. Jerry Jenkins and his books are so awesome! I found your blog through my friend Araken and Ian, in case you were wondering. Awesome post!

History does inspire me...the battles, amazing victories, suspenseful times, rebellions, treaties, strategies....the only problem is that teachers make them so dull. text books are annoying - its way better to look the stuff up on your own.
:)Ian(:
Oh yeah! I use historic events as well! It's fun to see how I can parallel reality in fantasy!
P.S. I know who won between the Muslims and Charles Martel!
I sensing History Channel fans. Personally, I wish we could switch all history class over to the History Channel, provided they don't try telling why the Ressurection isn't possible.
I met Jenkins a little while ago. His son, Dallas, is pretty funny! This is going to sound bad, but I've never actually read the Left Behind series. GASP!
You've hit on a very interesting subject, and one that I've considered many times over. I think that there is a very fine line to walk, and it is up to each author, personally, to choose how to walk that particular line. As for me, I do pull many of my battles from history, but I try to put as much spin on them as I can so that it's a whole new battle, and not one that a casual student of history could pick up on.
Actually, I just told a lie; I love the fortress Messada, in Israel, and the history behind it. In one battle scene, I stole the fortress itself. It's just too cool!

Yeah, it is a little annoying when the history books tells someone's story for them.
Well, I really reccommend the Left Behind Series. The adult and the kid's series. I can't decided which one is better;) By the way, I'm glad you liked my poetry. It's pretty easy for me to write. I might just submit one of my poems;)

I haven't read Left Behind, but Armageddon has me inspired. Imagine 200 million men daring to stand against God, only to be struck down effortlessly by Jesus...I can sorta see parallels btw that battle and Gandalf's coming to Helm's Deep!
I LOVE history. One good source for history is the Abeka history books. While I can't say I'm crazy about Abeka, there are certain subjects that I've NEVER found better taught in anything else I've read.

History is my favorite subject, but I sometimes I wish the writers would realize they're dealing with storys and not just facts.
History is wonderful when it's presented in the right way...I can't stand it when I'm expected to read about the past when it's given to me in a dry and tasteless manner. You are correct Jamin, when you say that writers need to realize they're dealing with more than facts.
oh! And I moved to a new blog hosting site...Wordpress I believe.
